Time to Get out of Dodge

When the crisis hits you want to be able to get out and get out fast. In the hours following an emergency whether that it a flood, nuclear meltdown or looting there will be a period of a few hours where the vast majority of people will be panicking. This small window of opportunity is your chance to get out ahead of the crowd and escape.

The first reaction people have when something goes terribly wrong is “I can’t believe this is happening” If you have been in a crisis situation you have probably heard someone say those exact words.

The fact is that a serious crisis is so out of the ordinary that at first it is really difficult to understand that this is happening right now and things have fundamentally changed.

When the crisis occurs many people are going to go into a state of shock and panic. You have to remember only a very small percentage, probably less than 5% of households, have any kind of preparation plan for an emergency. And panicked is not the best state to be in when deciding whether and how to evacuate.

Many people will simply refuse to believe what is happening thinking that it is going to be OK and that the authorities will save. This is despite the fact that the authorities may have no means to save their lives even if they intend to try. Secondly if they do decide to evacuate it will generally take them at least a few hours to get ready to leave.

With no plan in place of how to contact their family members it can take at least this long to get in contact with everyone. If the normal communication lines are down this can take even longer. Remember that a crisis is just as likely to happen in the middle of the day when the kids are at school, and you and your wife or husband is at work.

And packing isn’t as easy as it might seem. The question of what to take and what to leave behind is something that is best decided when you are in a rational state of mind. With children scared and possibly crying and your own sense of helplessness you will in likelihood pack the wrong things and leave important survival items behind. Items that you know you will need will seem to impossible to find because your mind will not be thinking clearly.

However if you have a bug out bag ready to go either in your house or in your car, all you will need to do is follow your emergency communication plan or designated meeting spot and you will be ready to go.

This is the time to hit the road before everyone else does. If you live in a major city you can imagine the chaos if the entire citizenry tries to leave the city at once.

Picture the worst grid lock you have ever experienced and then times that by ten. There will be at one point literally no way to get out of the city by car.
